Vienna in December

In the old days, it was not called the Holiday Season; the Christians called it "Christmas" and went to church; the Jews called it "Hanukkah" and went to synagogue;

the atheists went to parties and drank.

People passing each other in the street would say "Merry Christmas!" or "Happy Hanukkah!"

or (to the atheists) "Look out for a wall!" (Dave Barry)

The First Snow-Fall

The snow had begun in the gloaming,
And busily all the night

Had been heaping field and highway

With a silence deep and white.

Every pine, and fir and hemlock

Wore ermine too dear for an earl,

And the poorest twig on the elm-tree

Was ridged inch deep with pearl. (James R. Lowell)
